The Humboldt Research Awards have been a central pillar of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s sponsorship activities since 1972. The awards honor the global outstanding scientists outside Germany whose fundamental discoveries, new theories or findings have had a lasting effect on their discipline beyond their immediate research area and who are expected, moreover, to continue producing outstanding research in the future; Also, the nominee’s academic achievements must be internationally recognized and proven by corresponding successes in research. The Humboldt Research Award is the highest honor awarded to foreign scholars by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. It aims to commend the winners’ lifelong academic achievements and has a high international reputation. So far, a not insignificant number of award winner has subsequently been granted the Nobel Prize.
